Do I need a pry tool?

Nite Ize DoohicKey Key Tool

Nite Ize DoohicKey Key Tool

Lots of people who are into EDC like to carry a pry bar or pry tool. I’ve always thought they were cool but couldn’t really figure out what I might use one for in my daily life. Then I came across a great YouTube video from Maxlvledc where he talked about why you might want one, pros/cons of different ones, etc…

I still couldn’t really see a need for me to carry a more traditional pry bar like many of the ones featured in the video. One of the main reasons people like pry tools is to avoid using knives for prying things. Too much risk of damaging or dulling your knife doing something that a knife just isn’t meant to do! After watching that video, I decided to buy the Nite Ize DoohicKey Key Tool. It’s small, has a few different features built in, and at around five dollars there’s no major investment there if I find I don’t use it much.

One of the things that Maxlvledc mentioned in his video is that some of these have great uses for scraping stickers and labels off things and opening packages. Those were two things I figured I might find super useful. So, I bought two of these DoohicKey Key Tools! One for me to carry and one to keep downstairs near our front door hanging with our keys. It’s already been useful for opening packages since it’s right by the front door. Also, when it’s recycling night we tend to use that front entryway area for a staging ground to gather all the boxes to take out, so it’s been handy for helping break up and flatten those as well.

And it does even more than that! The scraper/box cutter end doubles as a flat head screwdriver, it has a bottle opener built in (What tool doesn’t these days???), wrenches built in (probably a feature I won’t find much use for but cool), a carabiner clip for attaching it to things, and a two-inch ruler on it (Centimeter ruler on the back!). I could see that little ruler coming in handy from time to time for random things when you can’t tell if something is an inch vs. inch and a half when you’re just trying to eyeball something. Oh… And for those of you that travel a lot this is TSA friendly!

I think this little tool is a great introduction to pry tools and I’ve been very happy with it so far. And at around five dollars I don’t think anyone would really regret this purchase.
