A little while back I wrote about the Rite in the Rain Index Card Wallet and using that as my method for carrying paper around instead of a notebook. I still love it and it is still the best way for me to make shopping lists, to do lists, and other random notes. It’s also handy to have the cards and paper if anyone I’m with needs something to write on. I still fully recommend that setup and continue to carry it!

Recently I decided that I wanted to try carrying a small notebook around as well. I’m not looking to do long form journaling or anything like that but more for brainstorming, notes to self, doodling, or just other random things I want to write down and keep. After looking at a lot of pocket-sized notebooks I settled on using Field Notes. They are a great size for portability (3.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall), sturdy, come in various cover designs (and they release new ones all the time), and come in different styles of paper (lined, blank, grid, dot grid, etc…). In my links at the bottom of this post I will put a few more links to other Field Notes notebooks besides the ones that I bought.

Once I had decided on Field Notes for the notebook, I wanted to find some kind of case for it because I also wanted to be able to carry a pencil and a pen easily with the notebook. I have a pen that I carry in my wallet all the time, but I wanted to make sure I had things to write with always with the notebook so that if something comes to mind, I’m ready to go without having to look for pen/pencil and paper. It’s all in one spot!

For the case I selected The Marksman from Arc Company. I’ve had a wallet from Arc Company for a while now and I absolutely love it. So, I knew before even getting The Marksman case that it would be a quality product. And it did not disappoint! Field Notes fit perfectly in the notebook slot and The Marksman case even comes with a notebook to get you started that’s the same dimensions as the Field Notes notebooks. I used the measurements given on the product page to determine what kind of pen and pencil would fit best in the pockets on the front.

After looking at those pocket measurements I decided to go with products from Rite in the Rain for the pen and pencil. The Mini Bolt-Action Pen and Gravity-Fed Lead Holder fit perfectly in the case! Both are weather resistant, sturdy, and perfect for EDC! I found a retractable eraser that fit just right in the third pocket to go with the pencil. So far, those three items have been perfect for this setup. These slots can also fit other EDC gear besides pens and pencils if you’d rather use them for carrying that kind of thing. The slots will easily fit various knives, multi-tools, flashlights, pry bars, and more! So, you can really mix and match what will work best for your needs.

In addition to the three slots on the front where I keep the writing instruments and the notebook slot, there is a pocket on the back of The Marksman case. At first, I wasn’t sure what I might want to put in there but then thought it might be handy to have a small ruler in the kit for drawing charts or doodling. I found the Pacific Arc Pocket Master Template Guide and it fits really well in that back pocket. It has a ruler as well as some standard template shapes like circles, squares, and arrows that can be handy.

So far, I am really enjoying this combination of items. But I love the flexibility of The Marksman case in terms of swapping out what goes in the pockets if I decide to. For now, I love that everything I need for writing something, brainstorming, or doodling is all in one neat package. This way everything stays together and ready to go and that makes it super easy to just put this case in a pocket or bag and you’re all set!
